Tomb of King David

Holy GravePilgrimage

The Tomb of King David on Mount Zion

Located within a Crusader-era complex just beyond the Zion Gate, this sacred shrine is revered as the traditional resting place of the second king of Israel. As you ascend the winding paths of Mount Zion in Jerusalem, you leave the bustle of the modern city behind for a site steeped in centuries of devotion. Entering the arched stone chamber, the air immediately cools and the sounds of the outside world fade, replaced by the soft, rhythmic murmuring of prayers echoing off ancient walls.

In the separate sections for men and women, you will find visitors from all walks of life pressing close to the massive stone cenotaph. The marker is draped in a heavy velvet cloth, richly embroidered with gold crowns and Hebrew scriptures. It is a time-honored tradition here to recite Psalms, or Tehillim, honoring David not just as a formidable monarch, but as the “Sweet Singer of Israel” who composed these timeless verses of longing and praise. Lighting a candle in the alcoves adds your own spark to the centuries of continuous worship at this location.

The site acts as a focal point among Jewish holy places, yet it also tells a broader story of Jerusalem’s complex past. The building itself has functioned as a church and a mosque over the millennia, and the Room of the Last Supper is located directly on the floor above. Standing before this monument allows you to connect deeply with the shepherd who unified the tribes and established Jerusalem as the eternal spiritual capital. Whether you come to petition for blessings or simply to witness history, the presence of King David’s legacy is palpable here.
