The Benedictine Abbey on Mount Zion
The Church of the Dormition is a majestic Catholic basilica and active monastery located just outside the walls of the Old City. As you approach Zion Gate, the massive bell tower and grey conical dome of this landmark immediately catch your eye, dominating the skyline of the southern hill. The land was gifted to Kaiser Wilhelm II at the turn of the 20th century, leading to the construction of this fortress-like German Benedictine monastery. Its Rhenish Romanesque architecture feels distinctively European against the golden Jerusalem stone, signaling its unique heritage among the city’s holy sites.
Stepping inside the circular sanctuary, your gaze is drawn upward to the intricate mosaics adorning the apse and the floor. The acoustics here are renowned; if you are fortunate enough to visit during a service, the chanting of the monks resonates powerfully against the curved stone walls. The floor itself is a masterpiece, depicting the zodiac, months, and the names of prophets, symbolizing the expanse of creation and history converging in this holy place.
A spiral staircase leads you down to the spiritual heart of the church, the Virgin Mary crypt. In the center of the rotunda lies a life-sized effigy of Mary in peaceful slumber, crafted from cherry wood and ivory. The dome above her features famous women from the Old Testament—Eve, Miriam, Ruth, and others—encircling the Virgin in a tribute to biblical femininity.
