The Pater Noster Church on the Mount of Olives
The Pater Noster Church is a Roman Catholic sanctuary and Carmelite monastery on the Mount of Olives, built over a cave where Christian tradition holds that Jesus taught his disciples the Lord’s Prayer. As you step into the grounds of this historic site, you enter a space that has anchored Christian pilgrimage in Jerusalem since the fourth century. The Gospel of Luke records the disciples asking, “Lord, teach us to pray,” and it is here that believers remember Christ sharing the words of the “Our Father” and delivering the Olivet Discourse.
Walking through the complex, you will find a layered architectural history typical of many Holy Land churches. The stone remnants of the original Byzantine basilica, commissioned by Emperor Constantine’s mother Helena, sit alongside the unfinished, open-air walls of a 1920s reconstruction project that was permanently abandoned when funding ran out. Near the entrance, you can view the tomb of French Princess Aurelia Bossi, who purchased the land in 1868 to establish the cloistered convent and revive the sanctuary from its Crusader-era ruins.
As you continue your visit, a prominent visual feature of the sanctuary lines the walls of the church and cloister. Colorful ceramic plaques display the Lord’s Prayer in more than 140 languages and dialects, ranging from ancient scripts to rare indigenous tongues. Following the stone path downward, you can enter the preserved ancient grotto beneath the church.
